Refrigerator Too Warm or Freezing Food
A fresh-food section that swings between too warm and freezing usually has an airflow or temperature-control problem rather than a failed compressor. Pinning down when it happens helps narrow the cause.
Safe checks before scheduling service
A symptom by itself does not identify the failed part. These simple checks may solve the problem or help you describe what is happening.
- Check the settings. A good starting point is about 37°F in the fresh-food section and 0°F in the freezer.
- Keep food away from the cold-air vent, usually at the back near the top. Items placed right in front of it can freeze even when the rest of the compartment is fine.
- Avoid overpacking the refrigerator; air needs room to circulate.
Common causes
These are the causes we find most often. Only an in-home diagnosis can confirm which one applies to your appliance.
Air damper stuck open or closed
Many refrigerators use a damper to control how much cold air flows from the freezer. If it sticks open, food freezes; if it sticks closed, the fresh-food section warms up.
Temperature sensor (thermistor) out of range
A faulty sensor gives the control board the wrong reading, so the refrigerator cools too much or too little.
Defrost problem restricting airflow
Frost buildup on the evaporator can block airflow to the fresh-food section, making it warm while the freezer still seems cold.
Control board or user interface fault
Electronic controls can fail to run the fans, damper or compressor correctly.
Worn door gasket
Warm air leaking in through a torn or flattened gasket makes temperatures uneven and causes frost and condensation.
Important safety note
If the fresh-food section stays above 40°F, keep perishable food somewhere cold and follow food-safety guidance until the refrigerator is repaired.

Frequently asked questions
What temperature should my refrigerator be?
Food-safety guidance is 40°F or below for the refrigerator and 0°F for the freezer. Around 37°F in the fresh-food section is a good setting for most homes.
Why does only the food at the back freeze?
Cold air enters the fresh-food section at the back, so food placed against the vent can freeze. If food freezes throughout the compartment, the damper, sensor or control is more likely the cause.
What is your diagnostic fee?
The diagnostic/service call is $45 and is waived when you approve the repair.
Does the online estimate include parts?
No. The $160–$220 range is an initial labor estimate only. Replacement parts, if required, are quoted separately before the repair.
