Refrigerator Leaking Water
Where the water shows up says a lot about the cause. Water under the crisper drawers or ice on the freezer floor usually points to the defrost drain, while water behind or under the refrigerator usually points to the water supply.
Safe checks before scheduling service
A symptom by itself does not identify the failed part. These simple checks may solve the problem or help you describe what is happening.
- Note where the water appears: inside the fresh-food section, on the freezer floor, under the unit or at the back.
- Check whether the water supply line behind the refrigerator is visibly loose, kinked or dripping.
- Make sure the refrigerator is level side to side and tilted slightly back so the doors close on their own.
Common causes
These are the causes we find most often. Only an in-home diagnosis can confirm which one applies to your appliance.
Clogged defrost drain
Melt water from the defrost cycle runs through a drain to a pan under the unit. If the drain clogs or freezes, the water backs up and collects under the crisper drawers or freezes on the freezer floor.
Water supply line or fitting leak
Plastic supply lines and compression fittings can crack or loosen, especially after the refrigerator has been moved. This usually shows up as water at the back or under the unit.
Water inlet valve leak
The inlet valve at the back of the refrigerator can crack or leak internally, dripping onto the floor or overfilling the ice maker.
Ice maker or dispenser problem
A misaligned fill tube, a cracked ice maker or a door dispenser problem can drip water inside the freezer or onto the floor in front of the refrigerator.
Cracked drain pan or water filter housing
A cracked drain pan under the unit or a filter that is not fully seated can leak slowly and is easy to miss.
Important safety note
If water is actively leaking, turn off the supply valve behind the refrigerator or under the sink if you can do so safely, and dry the floor to prevent damage.

Frequently asked questions
Can I keep using a leaking refrigerator?
Usually yes, if it is still cooling and you can shut off the water supply. Turn off the water to stop supply-side leaks and keep the area dry until the repair.
Why does my refrigerator leak after I changed the water filter?
A filter that is not fully seated, the wrong filter model, or air trapped in the line can all cause leaks or dripping. Re-seat the filter first; if the leak continues, the filter housing may be cracked.
What is your diagnostic fee?
The diagnostic/service call is $45 and is waived when you approve the repair.
Does the online estimate include parts?
No. The $160–$220 range is an initial labor estimate only. Replacement parts, if required, are quoted separately before the repair.
