Refrigerator Ice Maker Not Working
An ice maker needs three things: water reaching it, a freezer cold enough to freeze the water, and a working ice maker assembly to harvest the ice. The fix depends on which of those is missing.
Safe checks before scheduling service
A symptom by itself does not identify the failed part. These simple checks may solve the problem or help you describe what is happening.
- Make sure the ice maker is switched on and the shut-off arm or sensor is not blocked by ice in the bin.
- Confirm the water supply valve is open and the line behind the refrigerator is not kinked; if the water dispenser is slow too, the problem is likely upstream.
- Check the freezer temperature. Most ice makers need the freezer at about 0°F to work properly.
Common causes
These are the causes we find most often. Only an in-home diagnosis can confirm which one applies to your appliance.
Clogged water filter or low water pressure
A filter past its service life or low household water pressure can leave the ice maker with too little water, making small, hollow or no ice cubes.
Water inlet valve failure
If the valve does not open, no water reaches the ice maker. If it opens weakly or drips, the fill tube can freeze solid.
Frozen fill tube
A fill tube blocked with ice stops water from reaching the mold. It is often a symptom of another problem, such as a leaking valve or low water pressure, and we look for that cause too.
Failed ice maker assembly
The motor, sensor or heater inside the ice maker can fail. On many refrigerators the ice maker is replaced as a complete assembly.
Ice buildup in a door-mounted ice maker
Some French-door refrigerators with ice makers in the door can build up frost and ice in the ice compartment, jamming the auger or ice maker. The cause is usually a seal, fan or temperature issue in that compartment.
Important safety note
If you notice water leaking around the supply line or valve, turn off the water supply until the ice maker is inspected.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take for an ice maker to start making ice after a repair?
The first batch usually takes several hours after the freezer reaches temperature, and filling the bin can take a day or two.
My water dispenser works but the ice maker does not. What does that mean?
Water is reaching the refrigerator, so the cause is more likely the ice maker side of the inlet valve, a frozen fill tube, the ice maker assembly or the freezer temperature.
What is your diagnostic fee?
The diagnostic/service call is $45 and is waived when you approve the repair.
Does the online estimate include parts?
No. The $160–$220 range is an initial labor estimate only. Replacement parts, if required, are quoted separately before the repair.
