Refrigerator Not Cooling
A refrigerator that stops cooling usually still has some signs that point to the cause: whether the freezer is still cold, whether you can hear the compressor and fans running, and whether frost has built up behind the freezer panel.
Safe checks before scheduling service
A symptom by itself does not identify the failed part. These simple checks may solve the problem or help you describe what is happening.
- Confirm the refrigerator has power, the interior light works and the controls have not been turned down or switched to a showroom/demo mode.
- Make sure food is not blocking the air vents between the freezer and fresh-food sections.
- Check that the doors close and seal fully; a door left slightly open lets warm, humid air in and can frost up the evaporator.
Common causes
These are the causes we find most often. Only an in-home diagnosis can confirm which one applies to your appliance.
Dirty condenser coils or condenser fan failure
The condenser releases heat from the refrigerator. If the coils are packed with dust or the condenser fan near the compressor has stopped, the unit runs constantly but cannot cool properly, especially on warm days.
Evaporator fan not running
If the freezer is cold but the fresh-food section is warm, the evaporator fan that moves cold air from the freezer may have failed or be blocked by ice.
Defrost system failure
When the defrost heater, defrost thermostat or control fails, frost builds up on the evaporator coil until air can no longer flow. A thick layer of frost on the back panel of the freezer is a typical sign.
Start relay or compressor problem
A clicking sound every few minutes with no cooling often points to the compressor start relay or the compressor itself not starting.
Sealed-system leak or restriction
If the compressor runs but the evaporator never gets cold, the refrigerant system may have a leak or restriction. This requires sealed-system diagnosis and is sometimes not cost-effective to repair on older units.
Important safety note
If food has warmed above 40°F for more than two hours, follow food-safety guidance and do not rely on the refrigerator until it is repaired.

Frequently asked questions
Is it worth repairing a refrigerator that stopped cooling?
Often, yes. Fans, defrost components, relays and control boards are common repairs that cost far less than a new refrigerator. Sealed-system repairs are more expensive, and we will tell you honestly if replacement makes more sense.
Why is my freezer cold but my refrigerator warm?
That pattern usually points to airflow: a failed evaporator fan, a defrost problem that has iced over the coil, or a stuck air damper between the compartments.
What is your diagnostic fee?
The diagnostic/service call is $45 and is waived when you approve the repair.
Does the online estimate include parts?
No. The $160–$220 range is an initial labor estimate only. Replacement parts, if required, are quoted separately before the repair.
