Oven Temperature Is Wrong

If recipes come out underdone or burned at the right setting, the oven may be off by more than normal. Checking with an oven thermometer tells you whether the oven needs calibration or a part.

Safe checks before scheduling service

A symptom by itself does not identify the failed part. These simple checks may solve the problem or help you describe what is happening.

  • Place an oven thermometer in the center of the oven, preheat for at least 20 minutes and check the average temperature.
  • Remember that ovens cycle above and below the set temperature; a swing of about 25°F either way is normal.
  • Check your manual for a temperature offset or calibration setting; many ovens allow adjustment.

Common causes

These are the causes we find most often. Only an in-home diagnosis can confirm which one applies to your appliance.

Temperature sensor out of range

Most oven sensors read about 1,100 ohms at room temperature. A sensor out of specification makes the oven run hot or cold.

Calibration offset

Many electronic ovens allow the temperature to be adjusted by about 35°F. An offset that was changed can make the oven run hot or cold.

Weak igniter (gas ovens)

A weak igniter delays burner lighting, so the oven heats slowly and runs cooler than set.

Control board relay

A relay that sticks closed can make the oven overheat; one that fails open can stop it from reaching temperature.

Worn door gasket

Heat lost around the door makes the oven work harder and run cooler.

Important safety note

An oven that keeps heating after it is turned off can be dangerous. Turn off the breaker and do not use it until it is inspected.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate should my oven be?

Most ovens are designed to average within about 10°F to 25°F of the set temperature. A larger difference usually needs adjustment or repair.

Can I calibrate my oven myself?

Many ovens have a temperature offset setting described in the manual. If the oven is off by more than the adjustment allows, a part likely needs replacing.

What is your diagnostic fee?

The diagnostic/service call is $45 and is waived when you approve the repair.

Does the online estimate include parts?

No. The $160–$220 range is an initial labor estimate only. Replacement parts, if required, are quoted separately before the repair.
