Oven Heating Unevenly
Uneven baking can come from the oven, from how it is being used, or both. If cookies burn on one side or the bottom while the top stays pale, a failing element, fan or sensor is often the cause.
Safe checks before scheduling service
A symptom by itself does not identify the failed part. These simple checks may solve the problem or help you describe what is happening.
- Let the oven preheat fully before putting food in.
- Do not line the bottom of the oven or cover racks with foil; it blocks airflow and reflects heat.
- Try the middle rack position and leave space between pans and the oven walls.
Common causes
These are the causes we find most often. Only an in-home diagnosis can confirm which one applies to your appliance.
Bake or broil element failing
If one element is weak or not working, heat comes only from the top or the bottom of the oven.
Convection fan motor
A convection fan that has stopped or slowed down leaves hot and cold spots in convection modes.
Weak gas igniter
A weak igniter can delay or interrupt burner lighting, causing slow preheating and uneven temperatures.
Temperature sensor drift
A sensor that reads incorrectly causes the oven to overshoot or undershoot temperature.
Worn door gasket or hinges
Heat escaping around the door causes cooler spots near the front of the oven.
Important safety note
If you smell gas or see unusual flames from a gas oven, turn it off, leave the area and contact PG&E.

Frequently asked questions
Is it normal for an oven to have hot spots?
Most ovens have some temperature variation. Rotating pans halfway through baking is normal; food burning on one side while raw on the other is not.
Does convection fix uneven baking?
Convection helps distribute heat, but if the fan or element has failed, the oven will still bake unevenly.
What is your diagnostic fee?
The diagnostic/service call is $45 and is waived when you approve the repair.
Does the online estimate include parts?
No. The $160–$220 range is an initial labor estimate only. Replacement parts, if required, are quoted separately before the repair.
