Dryer Won't Start

When a dryer will not start, first find out whether it has power at all. A dryer that hums but does not turn has a different problem from one that shows no signs of life.

Safe checks before scheduling service

A symptom by itself does not identify the failed part. These simple checks may solve the problem or help you describe what is happening.

  • Make sure the dryer is plugged in fully and the breaker is on. Electric dryers use a double breaker; check both sides.
  • Confirm the door closes firmly and the control lock is off.
  • Listen when you press start: a hum without the drum turning, a click or nothing at all all point to different causes.

Common causes

These are the causes we find most often. Only an in-home diagnosis can confirm which one applies to your appliance.

Door switch

A failed door switch makes the dryer think the door is open, so it will not start.

Thermal fuse

On many dryers a blown thermal fuse stops the dryer from running at all. It usually blows because of a restricted vent.

Broken drive belt

If the motor runs but the drum does not turn, or the drum turns freely by hand, the belt is likely broken.

Start switch or control board

A worn start button, a failed timer or a faulty control board can stop the dryer from starting.

Motor failure

A motor that hums but does not start, or overheats and shuts off, may need replacement.

Important safety note

Unplug the dryer or turn off the breaker before opening any panels. For gas dryers, if you smell gas, leave the area and call PG&E.

Frequently asked questions

My dryer has power but will not start. What does that mean?

Power reaching the control means the cause is more likely the door switch, thermal fuse, start switch, belt switch or motor.

Why did my thermal fuse blow?

Thermal fuses usually blow because the dryer overheated, most often from a clogged or restricted vent. Replacing the fuse without fixing the vent often leads to another failure.

What is your diagnostic fee?

The diagnostic/service call is $45 and is waived when you approve the repair.

Does the online estimate include parts?

No. The $160–$220 range is an initial labor estimate only. Replacement parts, if required, are quoted separately before the repair.
