Dryer Takes Too Long to Dry
A dryer that takes two cycles to dry is usually a dryer that cannot move air. A restricted vent is the most common cause, but partial heat, sensor problems and even the washer can be to blame.
Safe checks before scheduling service
A symptom by itself does not identify the failed part. These simple checks may solve the problem or help you describe what is happening.
- Clean the lint screen before every load and check the outside vent flap for strong airflow while the dryer runs.
- Look at the duct behind the dryer. Crushed or long foil ducts restrict airflow.
- Check that clothes come out of the washer well spun. Soaking-wet laundry points to a washer drain or spin problem, not the dryer.
Common causes
These are the causes we find most often. Only an in-home diagnosis can confirm which one applies to your appliance.
Restricted dryer vent
Lint buildup, a crushed duct or a long vent run with many turns reduces airflow, so moist air cannot leave the drum.
Lint inside the dryer
Lint can collect inside the dryer cabinet and blower housing even when the lint screen is clean.
Partial heat
On gas dryers, weak gas valve coils can let the burner light and then go out. On electric dryers, a failing element or cycling thermostat can reduce heat.
Dirty moisture sensor
Auto-dry cycles rely on sensor bars inside the drum. Fabric-softener residue can make them end the cycle too early.
Washer not spinning out water
If the washer is not spinning properly, clothes enter the dryer much wetter than they should.
Important safety note
Lint buildup in dryer vents is a fire hazard. If the outside of the dryer gets very hot or you smell burning, stop using it until the vent and dryer are inspected.

Frequently asked questions
How often should a dryer vent be cleaned?
Most homes should have the vent cleaned about once a year, and more often with long vent runs or heavy use.
Can I use a foil or plastic duct behind my dryer?
Plastic duct should not be used. Rigid or semi-rigid metal duct with as few turns as possible gives the best airflow and is safer.
What is your diagnostic fee?
The diagnostic/service call is $45 and is waived when you approve the repair.
Does the online estimate include parts?
No. The $160–$220 range is an initial labor estimate only. Replacement parts, if required, are quoted separately before the repair.
