Dryer Not Heating
If the drum turns but there is no heat, the cause depends on whether the dryer is electric or gas. Electric dryers use a heating element and need full 240-volt power; gas dryers use an igniter and a gas valve.
Safe checks before scheduling service
A symptom by itself does not identify the failed part. These simple checks may solve the problem or help you describe what is happening.
- Clean the lint screen and make sure you selected a heated cycle, not air fluff or tumble.
- Check the outside vent flap while the dryer runs to make sure air is flowing.
- For an electric dryer, check that both sides of the double breaker are on; a dryer can tumble with only half its power but will not heat.
Common causes
These are the causes we find most often. Only an in-home diagnosis can confirm which one applies to your appliance.
Heating element (electric dryers)
An open heating element is one of the most common causes of no heat on electric dryers, often after years of restricted airflow.
Thermal fuse or high-limit thermostat
These safety parts open when the dryer overheats. They often fail because of a clogged vent, so we check the vent as well as replacing the part.
Igniter or flame sensor (gas dryers)
If the igniter does not glow or the flame sensor does not let the gas valve open, a gas dryer will not heat.
Gas valve coils (gas dryers)
When the igniter glows and goes out but the burner never lights, or lights and then shuts off, the gas valve coils are a common cause.
Cycling thermostat or control
A failed cycling thermostat, moisture sensor circuit or control board can also stop the heat.
Important safety note
If the dryer smells hot or scorched, stop using it until it is inspected. If you smell gas near a gas dryer, leave the area and call PG&E.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my dryer heat sometimes but not always?
Intermittent heat on gas dryers often points to weak gas valve coils. On electric dryers, a failing cycling thermostat, a loose connection or a restricted vent can cause it.
Is a dryer that does not heat a fire risk?
The no-heat problem itself is not, but the cause often is: a clogged vent makes the dryer overheat until a safety part fails. Have the vent checked when the dryer is repaired.
What is your diagnostic fee?
The diagnostic/service call is $45 and is waived when you approve the repair.
Does the online estimate include parts?
No. The $160–$220 range is an initial labor estimate only. Replacement parts, if required, are quoted separately before the repair.
