Dishwasher Not Draining

Standing water at the bottom of a dishwasher is usually caused by a blockage somewhere between the filter and the sink drain. A failed drain pump is also common, especially if you hear a hum but no water moving.

Safe checks before scheduling service

A symptom by itself does not identify the failed part. These simple checks may solve the problem or help you describe what is happening.

  • Remove and clean the filter at the bottom of the dishwasher, following your manual.
  • If you have a garbage disposal, run it to clear food; if it was just installed, the knockout plug in the dishwasher inlet may not have been removed.
  • If there is an air gap on the countertop next to the faucet, check it for debris.

Common causes

These are the causes we find most often. Only an in-home diagnosis can confirm which one applies to your appliance.

Clogged filter or sump

Food, glass and paper labels collect in the filter and sump area and stop water from reaching the drain pump.

Blocked drain hose, air gap or disposal connection

The drain hose can kink behind the dishwasher or clog where it connects to the disposal or sink drain.

Drain pump failure

If the pump hums but does not move water, or makes no sound at all, it may be jammed or failed.

Stuck check valve

The check valve keeps dirty water from flowing back into the dishwasher. If it sticks closed, water cannot drain.

Control or sensor problem

Less often, the control board or a sensor does not tell the pump to run.

Important safety note

Unplug the dishwasher or turn off its breaker before reaching into standing water.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there a little water in my dishwasher after it finishes?

A small amount of water around the sump is normal on many dishwashers. Water above the filter or covering the bottom of the tub is not.

My new disposal was just installed and now the dishwasher will not drain. Why?

New disposals come with a knockout plug in the dishwasher inlet. If it was not removed during installation, the dishwasher cannot drain.

What is your diagnostic fee?

The diagnostic/service call is $45 and is waived when you approve the repair.

Does the online estimate include parts?

No. The $160–$220 range is an initial labor estimate only. Replacement parts, if required, are quoted separately before the repair.
