Washer Not Draining

A washer that leaves water in the drum usually has a blockage in the pump filter, the drain hose or the house drain. A failed drain pump is the next most common cause.

Safe checks before scheduling service

A symptom by itself does not identify the failed part. These simple checks may solve the problem or help you describe what is happening.

  • Check that the drain hose is not kinked or pushed too far into the standpipe.
  • On a front-load washer, check the pump filter or coin trap behind the lower front panel; have towels ready for retained water.
  • Note any error code, such as OE on LG washers or 5C/5E on Samsung washers, which point to a drain problem.

Common causes

These are the causes we find most often. Only an in-home diagnosis can confirm which one applies to your appliance.

Clogged pump filter or coin trap

Socks, coins, hair ties and lint collect in the filter on many front-loaders and stop water from reaching the pump.

Drain pump failure

A pump that hums but does not move water, or makes no sound, may be jammed or failed.

Restricted drain hose or house drain

A kinked hose or a clogged standpipe or laundry drain can slow or stop draining.

Pressure switch or water-level sensor

If the washer cannot sense the water level correctly, it may not run the drain step properly.

Control board problem

Less often, the control does not send power to the drain pump.

Important safety note

Unplug the washer before opening the pump filter, and expect a lot of water to come out.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drain the washer myself?

On many front-loaders you can drain the water through the small hose next to the pump filter. Have towels and a shallow pan ready.

Why does my washer drain slowly?

A partially clogged filter, a hose pushed too far into the standpipe or a weak pump can all cause slow draining.

What is your diagnostic fee?

The diagnostic/service call is $45 and is waived when you approve the repair.

Does the online estimate include parts?

No. The $160–$220 range is an initial labor estimate only. Replacement parts, if required, are quoted separately before the repair.
